You don’t have to be Indiana Jones to unlock the secrets to saving fuel, saving money and keeping the air a little cleaner this summer. Kentuckiana Air Education (KAIRE) would like to offer up some simple tips on getting the best fuel economy while helping reduce emissions.
Dr. Bruce Banner, aka The Incredible Hulk, might not be able to control his temper over rising gas prices, but we can all “go a little green” by getting the best gas mileage we can. Lighten up your “hulk” by taking excess weight out of the trunk. One hundred pounds in your trunk (think kitty litter, boxes of magazines, and baseball equipment) can reduce your miles per gallon by one to two percent. Get Smart. You don’t have to be secret agent Maxwell Smart to know about a gadget that is easy to use that keeps your tires at the optimal pressure. All you need is a tire gauge to find out if your tires are at the optimal pressure, which means better mileage and reduced wear on your tires. Tire maintenance, along with scheduled oil changes, keeps your vehicle at its most gas-efficient and most air-friendly. Speed Racer. If you rev your engine and race to the next stoplight, you’re losing the race to save fuel. Accelerate gently to make the most of your gas mileage. Slow down. According to CNN Money, driving 70 miles per hour instead of 60 miles per hour is the equivalent of paying 54 cents extra per gallon. The Dark Knight. Fueling up in the evening or early morning when it’s cooler helps reduce evaporation and keeps fumes out of the air. Scheduling your fill-up at these less busy times can prevent time spent idling (and burning fuel) while you wait your turn at the pump. Sex and the City. Speaking of pumps, fabulous shoes may impress the ever fashionable Carrie and the gals, but what everyone wants this year is a beautiful blue “Breathe” t-shirt. KAIRE staffers will be out this summer at local events, distributing tire gauges and our own version of couture fashion. To find out where we’ll be, check our events sections here at helptheair.org.
