Emily Goldstein, a freshman at the University of Louisville
and an avid environmentalist, just returned from the Arctic on her most recent
trip to study polar bears. At the age of
16, she was one of 16 teens chosen from around the world to go on a research
trip in Churchill, Manitoba to study how climate change is affecting the
bears.
Since then she has been giving talks to groups on her experience, to over 2,000 people and counting. She has convinced thousands of people and dozens of businesses to make changes to use less energy, and has saved over 16 million pounds of carbon from being pumped into the atmosphere. She is on the teen advisory panel of the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF), and writes a weekly blog for the Mother Nature Network. She wrote a website on climate change and the bears and represents the Louisville Zoo as their Arctic Ambassador. Emily wants to help stop climate change and help the bears. She and two other Louisville teens, Sam Leist from St. X and Kaitlin O’Bryan from Atherton High School, have designed an Energy Use Assessment Kit which they take to businesses/organizations to help the companies make small changes which will result in less carbon emissions, and save them money. The kits are free, and the teens are even offering to help educate employees on why the changes are so important. Emily is asking for names of companies that might be interested in having her come in to talk to them about her project.
